about it. >> reporter: does this move mean you believe you're clear of any fbi probe? >> it means exactly what it is, that i am going to get my signatures to be eligible for reelection. >> mayor gray never liked long campaigns. he has but one month to collect the 2,000 signatures needed from d.c. voters to get on the ballot. that should not be a problem for an incumbent mayor explaining the shenanigans and illegalities from his 2010 campaign could prove to be a really big prable. >> in 2010 the mayor -- problem. >> in 2010 the mayoral campaign was compromised. >> reporter: u.s. attorney ron mecham never accused gray of wrongdoing, but several others have been indicted for paying off another candidate and paying an off the books shadow campaign. the u.s. attorney's office said told the probe into widespread

that these other candidates cannot keep pounding away at? if we move off that dime, he may be in good shape. muriel bowser, tommy wells, two candidates who think vincent gray should be limited to one term had these remarks today. >> we have been focused on the mayor's issue since march 23rd. i was the first person to get in the race because that's how important i think it is to talk about our future and we've learned from residents of the district of columbia that they desperately want a fresh start in the mayor's office. it hasn't mattered to us really who got in the race. we've been staying focused on our message. we're confident we'll have a new mayor. >> we've soon people around this 2010 campaign go to jail for breaking the law and we know that the shadow campaign was run right next-door with friends of vince gray's running the campaign. i don't know, you know. i think that vince gray has failed to explain it to us because i know that he's

worried it will have something to do with the investigation. the investigation apparently is not done. it's ongoing and i believe that the city needs to move forward and turn the page. >> make no mistake, this campaign is just getting started. the democratic primary is five months away april 1st. the winner, the overwhelming favorite to win the general election because democratic voters outnumber republicans in the district of columbia by a 9- 1 margin. of course, the news that mayor gray is seeking a second term spread through d.c. streets quickly. we sent our ken molestina out to gauge the response from d.c. residents. he's live now with more. what's the word on the street there? >> reporter: a lot of people are asking the same question. what took the mayor so long to announce his candidacy? he practically waited till the last moment. it's been the talk of the town here in d.c. the entire night and tonight i'll tell you something. these streets are packed with all kinds of opinions.

after spitting his gum out mayor gray chose to play coy with media moments after announcing his candidacy suggesting reporters show up to an event monday night to talk about something other than his campaign. >> what did you think about the turkey bowl? >> reporter: he eventually answered our questions, but by then washingtonians had already formed their opinions and were openly expressing their thoughts about mayor vincent gray seeking another term. >> i'm excited. >> i think it's stupid. >> reporter: why? >> because we're already losing because of him. >> he's done a lot for the covenant house, so why not? he should stay of. >> reporter: clearly the restriction is mixed. people say it's obvious why. >> the ongoing investigation into his last campaign. >> reporter: while four of his former staffers pleaded guilty to felony charges, the u.s. attorney's office has not charged gray. they do tell us that investigation is ongoing. now many ask the same question. is mayor gray the right man for this city? >> the city is changing a lot and maybe it's time to look at

d.c. police are just releasing a video of a machine they say raped a -- man they say raped a woman in northwest d.c. attacked last tuesday in the 5100 block of wisconsin avenue. this is the man police say who approached her from behind and force heard into an alley. if you recognize him, cops would love to hear from you. a marine is guilty of killing another marine. 22-year-old michael poth now faces 60 years in prison for the murder of philip bushong. poth stabbed bushong after the two got into a fight in southeast d.c. back in april of 2012. he will be sentenced in february. tonight there's a $25,000 reward being offered in a forestville, maryland murder. around 3:00 this morning dalonte jackson was killed inside this bp gas station in the 3200 block of walters lane. doesn't work at the station, but police say it appears that he was killed during a robbery. who would steal from the

salvation army? try a pair of no good low down crooks. look at this video. two suspects caught on camera breaking into the salvation army offices early sunday morning at the solomon g. brown corps community center in southeast. they cleaned out the safe and a bunch of those famous red kettles, thousands of donated dollars not even counted yet. a security guard said the thieves threatened him with a knife when he tried to stop them. >> it just makes you feel like you want it give up on people, but you can't. >> we have put kettles back on the street. we're moving forward. >> the ironic thing is that stolen money was earmarked for struggling neighborhood families, but with your help the salvation army hopes to recoup that loss. a busy cyber monday, early numbers indicate online shopping up 20% over last year. according to ibm benchmark, nearly 1/3 of shopping was done on smartphones and tablets. today is expected to be the busiest day of the year for

miles of a warehouse had. >> these are autonomous. you give them instructions which gps coordinates to go to and they fly to those gps coordinates. >> reporter: wusa9 has actually had one of these drones for about a year, but we've been unable to really use it, both because of legal restrictions and because of d.c.'s no-fly zone. amazon would have to deal with the faa's drone restrictions and then there are questions about safety. can you imagine one of those 5- pound packages dropping right on your head? and then there are questions of privacy. imagine if you had a drone flying over your head looking in your windows. aviation experts say it is doable and the faa tells me it is committed to the safe, efficient and timely integration of unmanned aircraft into the nation's airspace.
